RV remodel tips and tricks!

So in this 10-month long remodel, we picked up on a few things that we figure may come in handy for fellow RV re-modelers. We'll be constantly updating this list as we remember things so keep checking back!

1) Nothing in a camper is square! Not the ceiling, not the floor, not the cabinets...NOTHING! It will drive you crazy. You've got to just roll with it and accept the fact that nothing in your camper will be perfectly square. Ever.

2) They put the camper together in this order: floor, flooring, walls, ceiling. You will never get all of the carpet out from under the walls because they literally put the walls on top of the carpet. It's impossible. Just cut as close as you can and accept defeat.

3) Use a gripping primer before painting the walls. We used Bullseye 1-2-3 and it worked great!

4) Texture the walls with Orange Peel before painting. It gives it a more homey feel.

5) Baseboards & ceiling trim (even if they are seriously small and thin) make a difference. We have some tiny little baseboards & ceiling trim but they make it feel more like a house and less like a camper. They also give the walls a really nice framed feel.

6) STORAGE, STORAGE, STORAGE! Every storage compartment you take out, have an idea where you're going to replace it. There is never too much storage in a camper. Seriously.

7) Keep an eye on the weight. Know what your truck/vehicle can handle and know what the axle rating is for the RV itself. Keep an eye on how much weight you're removing and how much you're putting back in. Give yourself a few thousand pounds to play with for your stuff.

8) Have a plan. Know what you need and what isn't necessary. Know what the space will be used for and be practical about it before you ever start building.

9) If you're unsure about how to approach something, do lots of research! Chelsea would spend days checking blogs and forums on how to do something and googling the electrical or plumbing work that would entail. She would explain to me exactly what she was going to do to make sure she understood it before she even started the project. Knowledge is power, guys. Seriously.

How about you? What were things you wish you knew when you were remodeling? Comment your tips and tricks in the comments and I'll add yours to the list! Don't worry - you'll get the credit :)
